I was challenged to create a album cover for an album of my choosing, using a physical implement to render part of the artwork.
I researched the album I was designing for "Una Lluvia de Rosas" by Los Angeles Azules, a cumbia collective. Their modern graphic style uses complex patterning, visual imagery, and bold intricate typography. The current album cover does not link itself to this visual style due to its age. In this exercise, I aimed to update the album cover art to the new graphic style.
As a key part of this process I created the vector image of what I wanted the album cover to appear. I used these vectors to create cricut svg files and cut select paper into the shapes I needed. I physically assembled the album cover pieces and scanned a high quality version of it into Photoshop. I designed the rest of my assets in Illustrator and Photoshop. Alongside the album cover, I used these scanned assets to create a CD cover and promotional poster to accompany the artwork.
Editing with Intention
An intriguing visual language, faithful to the source material, yet introducing new elements.
My resulting album cover, poster, and CD were received positively by my peers. The color choices, intrigue, and bold nature of the cover lended itself cohesively with the other two deliverables. Experimenting with the composition and construction of the graphic, created an additional layer of interest for the viewer. This also inspired me to work with color more boldly, using my foundational color theory background to inform decisions.
